Once - Morris Gleitzman - Chapters 7-8 - Double Lesson!
This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of the chapters 7 to 8 of Morris Gleitzman’s 'Once.’ In this section of the text, Felix and Zelda are caught by the Nazis and forced to walk into the city with thousands of other Jews. Along the journey, they experience several atrocities.
The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
-Retrieving information;
-Inferring and deducing hidden meanings;
-Exploring themes.
The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning.
This lesson has a particular focus on the themes of persecution and innocence. Students consider how these themes have been introduced throughout the text so far, and then consider how they are further developed within the two chapters.
There’s a lot in the session (23 slides in total) so I would recommend breaking into two lessons. The lessons are most suitable for students in upper KS2, but may be adapted for other year groups, depending upon the individual context of the school and students.

Autism Awareness Assembly!
This informative, engaging and original assembly aids children in understanding what autism is and how to help make their school a happy and inclusive place for everyone. This is achieved through helping children to:
Understand what autism is and how it can affect people in different ways;
Consider how people with autism may feel in certain situations and thinking of ways in which they can be helped and supported;
Reflect on the amazing achievements of autistic people from across society.
This assembly is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people.
It includes links to two extremely fitting and inspiring videos (hyperlinked into the slides). The first is a beautiful, age-appropriate description of what autism is and how someone with the world might perceive autism. The second is a link to a song/ video put together and performed by students with autism. The lyrics fit perfectly with the main messages of the assembly.
The assembly can feasibly be used with students of all ages, but was originally created for primary school children. The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guidance notes to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - Chapters 19-20 - Double Lesson!
This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of Chapters Nineteen and Twenty of John Boyne’s 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.’ In this final section of the text, Bruno enters the camp disguised as a prisoner in order to help Shmuel find his father, he and Shmuel become victims of the horrors of the Holocaust, and Bruno’s family are heartbroken at his disappearance.
